A Taste of Shanghai: Yaso Tangbao

Hey everyone! It’s been a little while. So, it’s only appropriate to return with something near and dear to my heart: Shanghai street food. Enter Yaso Tangbao.

How cute is this place? Conveniently located off Downtown Brooklyn’s Fulton Street, this place could not be more clutch. Yaso Tangbao proudly serves fast casual Shanghai street food, upholding their claim of being “more than just soup dumplings.”

Don’t worry there’s no sacrifice with quality just because the food comes fast. The restaurant layout allows eaters to observe signature menu items, including spicy pork soup dumplings and pork shao mai, being made by hand. That’s quality. Check out the killer pan-fried pork bao topped with black sesame seeds in the below image. The fluffy, delicate dough absorbed the juicy pork within which was elevated by the mild chinkiang vinegar and homemade chili oil. After shamelessly eating three bao, I enjoyed the Shanghai cold noodle (pictured below on the right). I’m always weary of cold dishes, but this was beautifully done and refreshing. The noodles are paired with crisp bean sprouts and carrots, all tossed in a light peanut sauce. Simply delicious.

I had the pleasure of chatting with Chi Zhang, Shanghai native and Yaso Tangbao’s marketing manager, who gave us the low down on the menu. He recommended the below sweet pumpkin cakes which were delightfully chewy (think mochi-like consistency) and coated with crunchy coconut flakes. He also said that the braised pork meatballs are also high up on his and many visitors’ list. I’ll certainly be back to check them out.

BrklynHospitality’s Quick & Dirty: 4.5/5. The food is tasty, affordable and filled me up for the rest of the day. I fully intend to return and try the rest of the menu. Until then, I suggest you get started as well.
